The Chicago flag is an image very close to the hearts of many Chicagoans, and is now 100 years old. The city adopted its flag on 4th April 1917 after a design competition held by the Chicago Municipal Flag Commission. 

The flag of Chicago consists of two light blue stripes cutting across a white background to create three white stripes alternating with the blue. The middle white band, which is thicker than the top and bottom, contains four red six-pointed stars. 

The middle white colour stripe is wider than the upper and lower ahite stripe, while both the light blue stripes are equal in width and length. 

The dimension of the Chicago flag is 2:3 and it is used as the Civil Flag.

The Chiago flag consists of the three white stripes and these stripes represent the North, West, and South sides. History Of Chicago Flag 

In 1915 Chicago Carter Harrison, Jr., decided that the time had come for Chicago to join the dozens of other American municipalities that had adopted an official flag. The 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition had come and gone with only a red banner emblazoned with a white pall to advertise the city’s “municipal colors”. Harrison’s flag commission received more than 1,000 proposals before settling on a design submitted by Wallace Rice, a lecturer in heraldry and flag history at the Art Institute of Chicago. 

The original design of Rice’s only incorporated two stars, representing the Chicago fire of 1871 and the Columbian Exposition. 

The Chicago flag new adopted in 1917 after the design by Wallace Rice won a city Council sponsored competition.
